Purity of intentions

Ok for the first post I thought what better to start with than intentions, of why we do what we do in life? though it should be a simple thing and is very important, it is very easy to forget.

Rasoolullah sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam said, “The reward for deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended”
(Al-Bukhari).

Niyyah is the intention; In Islam everything we do has to be purely for the sake of Allah ‘azza wa jall otherwise it will be rejected on Yaum Al Qiyaamah. Imagine you do all these acts of worship but then you come on the Day of Judgement and its thrown back at your face? Scary.

To make sure that does not happen we must purify our intentions before, during and after doing something as Shaytan the accursed will do all he can to take us to the Fire. You may start doing something with the wrong intention that’s no problem as soon as you remember purify your intentions and take refuge with Allah ‘azza wa jall from Shaytan the accursed.

Another aspect of intention is ikhlaas literally meaning purity. It is to purify our intentions so that it is sincerely for the sake of Allah ‘azza wa jall.

A short but beautiful surah of the Qur’an is named Al Ikhlaas referring to the purity of faith and belief:

Say: He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him. (Al-Ikhlaas 112)

Rasoolullah sallAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam said:
“Verily, Allah does not look to your faces and your wealth but He looks to your hearts and to your deeds” (Muslim).

If when doing an action you are doing it to show off, to be known so that people say you are cool and praise you and so on, ask yourself is what others think of you more important than what position you hold in the sight of Allah? What is the point of a few moments of pride and fame compared to pleasure of Allah? There is no comparison; it is foolishness that drives us to such low way of thinking.

So lets strive to purify our niyyah inshAllah and strive for the pleasure of Allah jalla jalaaluh.

‘But the greatest bliss is the good pleasure of Allah that is the supreme felicity.’ (Surah Ar Ra’d:5)
